Sapphire September Birthstone

History:
Derived from the Greek sappheiros, "blue stone." At the time probably referred to lapis lazuli instead. Ancient Persians believed the earth was mounted on a great sapphire whose color was reflected in the sky. Symbol of loyalty, faithfulness and trust. Admired for their beauty and healing powers for thousands of years.

Facts & Figures:
In the middle ages, clergy would wear sapphires in rings to represent their connection to heaven. This tradition has helped make the sapphire a popular choice for engagement rings. One of the most famous examples being the ring Prince Charles presented to Lady Diana. Birthstone for the zodiac signs Virgo & Libra.

Healing Properties:
September's birthstone is believed to protect from evil and sickness. Considered the "stone of wisdom." Liberates mental tension and depression. Brings serenity and peace of mind, and stimulates concentration.

Color:
While they are known for their true blue hue, this gemstone also dazzles in shades of pink, yellow, green and orange. Sapphires actually come in every color of the rainbow except red.

Characteristics:
Sapphires, as well as rubies, are made of the mineral corundum. The second hardest gemstone after the diamond (9 on the Mohs scale), making it extremely durable and long-lasting.
