History:
Derived from the Greek sappheiros, "blue stone." At the time probably referred to lapis lazuli instead. Ancient Persians believed the earth was mounted on a great sapphire whose color was reflected in the sky. Symbol of loyalty, faithfulness and trust. Admired for their beauty and healing powers for thousands of years.

Facts & Figures:
In the middle ages, clergy would wear sapphires in rings to represent their connection to heaven. This tradition has helped make the sapphire a popular choice for engagement rings.
