Platinum and white gold became the dominant settings for sapphires in contemporary fine jewelry because they don't compete with the stone's color. However, yellow gold and sapphire have a much longer history, rooted in centuries of Indian, Persian, and Victorian jewelry where the contrast between gold and blue was an intentional and defining aesthetic.
