Double refraction was identified as a defining optical characteristic of moissanite alongside its high refractive index and dispersion. A single ray of light entering the stone splits into two, a consequence of the hexagonal or polytypic crystal structure. The property contributes to visual brilliance and produces a facet doubling effect under magnification that gemologists use as one of the primary identification markers for the stone.
