Retaining Value over the Ages

At the time of their discovery, diamonds were valued because of their strength, brilliance, and ability to refract light and engrave metal. Diamonds were worn as adornments, used as cutting tools, served as a talisman to ward off evil, and were believed to provide protection in battle. Interestingly, diamonds were used as medical aid in the Dark Ages and were thought to cure illness and heal wounds when ingested. Diamonds are also the April birthstone, making Diamond Studs an excellent birthday present.

Diamonds: A Cut Above the Rest

With the surge in popularity of the precious stone, many companies and organizations began campaigns to educate jewelers and consumers about what to look for when selecting a diamond. As jewelers experimented with enhancing the diamond's visual appeal and presentation, new cutting techniques were adopted to help increase the stone's brilliance. Over time, several prominent shapes emerged as the most popular varieties, including round, oval, marquise, square (princess), and rectangular (emerald). The 4Cs of Diamonds - cut, color, clarity, and carat weight - are the most important characteristics to understand when making a diamond purchase.

What Makes a Gemstone So Valuable

According to our gemstone experts, there are a few things to focus on when defining the value of gemstones:

  • Durability: No matter how beautiful and unique a gemstone looks, one of its most important characteristics is its ability to endure. After all, does it really matter how beautiful your gemstone might be if it's not going to last based on the use and wear of it?
  • Rarity. Rare and scarce gemstones are beautiful. It can feel exciting and special to be wearing a gem that very few other people own. Being unique is a quality and trait many people value and seek both personally and in jewelry.
  • Acceptability. While certain gems are extremely popular for specific occasions, personal taste and preferences play an important role. Fashion trends often determine the value of different gemstones.
  • Beauty. Beauty is indeed in the eye of the beholder! What one might find beautiful is different from what someone else might think. It's all about finding the right one for you. So what are you waiting for? Discover your favorite gemstone studs amidst our vast collection.

Topaz Studs

Enrich Any Jewelry Collection with Our Topaz Studs

Did you know that topaz is a nesosilicate mineral? It is one of the hardest naturally occurring minerals produced in many places around the world. Before the 20th century, all yellow, brown, and orange transparent gems were called topazes. Modern gemology has defined topaz as a distinct gem species, chemically and physically. Although topazes come in many colors — such as rare, natural pinks and reds and treated blues and coated varieties —many people still associate these gems with yellow. Choose your favorite topaz studs from our exclusive collection.

Topaz Popularity and Symbolism

Topaz has been popularly associated with wealth. Most likely due to this yellow color, some believed topaz had the mystical ability to attract gold. In particular, topazes set in gold purportedly did this most adeptly. Apparently, esteem follows wealth, as topaz has been associated with royalty, too. It's also the traditional November birthstone making topaz studs a perfect gift!

Topaz symbolism and lore have also covered many other areas, such as health, love, and astrology. It is reported to relieve arthritis pain, improve digestion, aid in weight loss, and attract love. St. Hildegard recommended the topaz as a cure for dim vision. After soaking a topaz in wine for three days and nights, rubbing the stone gently on the eyes would help. Some believed it could cure an even wider range of ailments, including the ability to ward off accidents and fires if kept in the home, and it could prevent nightmares if kept under a pillow.

The 4 C's of Sapphires

Focus on color. The color is the main attraction of a sapphire. Look at the hue and saturation closely.

Check the treatment. Sapphire treatment is something that will affect the price and quality of your gem. Untreated sapphires command the highest price, while less expensive sapphires may be Beryllium treated or surface diffused.

Look at different colors. The classic blue sapphire is the most popular, but other variants, such as pink or yellow sapphires, make for beautiful, unique jewelry pieces.

As a naturally-formed gemstone, sapphires almost always have slight flaws and inclusions. This isn't a drawback — it actually proves that a sapphire is genuine and makes it unique.

Sapphires are extremely durable and won't scratch easily. They score a 9 on the Mohs' scale of mineral hardness, second only to diamonds at a perfect 10. Due to its excellent color, hardness, durability, and luster, our sapphire studs are of high quality.

Retaining its Worth & Value

A jewel steeped in history, the magnificent sapphire is highly cherished with its deep blue allure. The sapphire is forever associated with sacred things considered a stone of wisdom, royalty, prophecy, and Divine favor. The heavenly blue signifies the height of celestial hope and faith, believed to bring protection, good fortune, and spiritual insight—a symbol of power and strength, kindling kindness, and wise judgment. Sapphire is September's birthstone and the traditional wedding anniversary gift for the 5th and 45th year, making Sapphire Studs a perfect gift!

How Do Cultured Whole Pearls Differ?

Akoya Cultured Pearls are the most familiar type of saltwater cultured pearl to most people in the US and other Western markets. Many customers think of white or cream-colored Akoyas as the classic pearl used for jewelry, especially single-strand necklaces. Japan and China both produce Akoya cultured pearls.

South Sea Cultured Pearls are saltwater cultured pearls sourced primarily from Australia, Indonesia, and the Philippines. These pearls can be white to silver or golden, depending on the type of oyster. Due to a long growth period, their large size and thick nacre, plus their limited critical growing conditions, are all factors contributing to their value.

Tahitian Cultured Pearls are cultivated primarily around the islands of French Polynesia. The most familiar of these is Tahiti. These saltwater cultured pearls sometimes referred to as black pearls, have a wide color range. They might be gray, black, or brown, and they can have blue, green, purple, or pink overtones.

The pearl is a symbol of perfection and incorruptibility and a symbol of long life and fertility. Our jewelry experts only select the best pearls for each of their exemplary designs.

History & Current Trends

Although cubic zirconia was discovered as a natural mineral in 1937, crystals usable for faceting were first produced in 1969. A practical skull-melting technique was developed in the USSR in 1972, making commercial production feasible. At first, many jewelry retailers showed strong resistance to handling cubic zirconia, but now it has a current output of approximately 60 million carats per year, becoming the dominant diamond imitation. Thus, creating its own separate niche in the jeweler's range of goods.

Distinguishing Cubic Zirconia from the Diamond

  • HARDINESS. Approximately 8 on Mohs hardness scale versus a rating of 10 for diamonds.
  • CUT. Cubic Zirconia can be cut differently and "smoothed" compared to diamonds whose edges remain sharp because of the hardiness difference.
  • POLISHING. Diamonds will rarely show their polished marks, while CZ will show polishing marks along the same direction of polish.
  • DENSITY. The density of CZ is about 1.7 times that of a diamond, allowing skilled gem identifiers to tell the difference between the two by weight.
  • ENERGY. CZ is a thermal insulator, whereas the diamond is the most powerful thermal conductor.
  • COLOR. Only the rarest of diamonds are truly colorless. CZ is often entirely colorless, equivalent to a perfect "D" on a diamond's color grading scale.
