Stainless Steel Jewelry Making

Steel is a hard and ductile, gray-colored metal made from iron and carbon. During ancient times, steel was used primarily for weapons, especially swords. The earliest artifact of steel was found in Anatolia (Asia Minor) and is believed to be around 4,000 years old! But steel production for weapons really took off in Sparta during 650 BC.

Steel History

Since the discovery of stainless steel (a corrosion-resistant alloyed steel), steel has broadened its field of use. You'll find it in buildings, vehicles, cutlery, tools, and appliances. And modern designers have taken advantage of its appealing industrial look, using it in jewelry, watches, interior design, serveware, and home accents.

Ross Simons' Steel Collection

Ross-Simons' offers a variety of stainless steel jewelry for men and women, as well as some stainless steel flatware and collectibles for the home or office. All stainless items are alloyed with at least 10.5% chromium, which increases the steel's ability to resist corrosion, rusting, and staining. There may also be times where nickel is present to further prevent rusting and increase the luster. The amount of chromium and nickel in stainless steel is sometimes indicated by a ratio. For example, 18/10 would mean that there is 18% chromium and 10% nickel. 18/0 would be 18% chromium, 0% nickel.

To give steel a decorative color, such as black or rose, it may be covered with PVD, or "Physical Vapor Deposition." PVD is a layer of colored film that forms over stainless steel in a vacuum chamber. PVD is used often in sporty watches because it is resilient to outdoor conditions, and also steel cable designs since it bonds easily with the textured surface.

Stainless steel is easy to maintain due it its hardness and resistance to stains and rusts. However it can get dirty or start to look dull without proper care.
