The deeper story

A Storied Heritage

Victorian animal jewelry functioned as a coded language. Serpent rings meant eternal love, dove pendants meant peace, and swallow charms were sailors' talismans of safe return. This gave wearers a way to communicate personal significance through their jewelry.

Mozambique's Montepuez deposit, identified in 2009, rapidly became a major commercial source producing material competitive with Burmese ruby at the fine end, shifting the market considerably within a decade. Thailand, Madagascar, Sri Lanka, and Tanzania contribute material with distinct color profiles reflecting the mineral chemistry and geological conditions of each deposit: origin is both a provenance category and a color predictor in fine ruby.
