Developed by the Gemological Institute of America, the 4Cs address four distinct physical realities: cut governs light performance, color measures the degree of colorlessness, clarity documents internal and surface features, and carat weight is a precise mass measurement. Each criterion is independently assessable, and the combination produces a profile specific enough to distinguish one diamond from another of identical weight.
