Cut is the only human-applied variable in diamond grading, and it is assessed for its effect on optical performance: how precisely facets are shaped and aligned determines the angles at which light enters and exits the stone, with ideal proportions producing maximum light return through the table as brilliance, separation of white light into spectral color as fire, and dynamic movement of light and dark areas as scintillation.
