The stud earring does not hang, swing, or dangle. Post meets lobe, backing holds post, face stays put, creating a flush profile.
A Storied Heritage
Wire and hook findings, which curve through the piercing and allow earrings to hang, were the standard construction for pierced ears from antiquity through much of modern history. The post-and-back system, which holds the earring flush and stationary against the lobe, became dominant in the 20th century as both ear piercing and the stud earring format became mainstream in Western jewelry.
