Unheated rubies carry a premium because they're genuinely rare: most ruby on the market has been heat treated to improve color, which is standard and accepted practice. Rubies that achieved their color entirely through geological processes, certified by a gemological laboratory, command substantially more, particularly from Burmese and Mozambican origins. Treatment status is the difference between fine ruby and exceptional ruby.
