The deeper story

Origin Story

The queen conch of the Caribbean has long been the primary source of conch shell for jewelry. Its pink-to-orange layered structure suited carving, inlay, and bead production, and the tradition of fine pink conch cameo work became concentrated in Italian craftsmanship, particularly in Torre del Greco.

A Storied Heritage

Shell cameo carving's rise in the nineteenth century followed from converging factors: layered helmet and sardonyx shells, concentrated carving skill in Naples and Torre del Greco, and a Grand Tour market creating sustained demand among European and American travelers. Those workshops established shell cameos as a recognized fine jewelry category rather than a craft curiosity.

Visually Speaking

The Victorian oval covered in engravings has had a full redesign. Today's lockets come geometric, architectural, minimalist. But open one up and the hinged compartment is still doing exactly what it always did.
