Opaque enamel declares its color; translucent enamel reveals it. The first blocks light entirely, the second uses light passing through the glass to interact with the metal surface beneath.
Industry Insight
Topaz takes its name from Topazios, the ancient Greek designation for a Red Sea island now identified as Zabargad. The stone mined there was almost certainly chrysolite rather than true topaz. The name stuck regardless, which is a reminder that ancient gemological terminology was organized around appearance and location rather than mineralogical accuracy.
