Cultured pearl luster is a product of nacre, the organic substance the mollusk secretes in concentric layers around the nucleus during growth. Cultivation practices that allow longer nacre development produce pearls with greater thickness and correspondingly deeper luster.

Industry Insight

Natural and cultured pearls are both genuine nacre. The only difference is how the process started: accidental irritant in a wild mollusk for natural, deliberate nucleus implant for cultured. This process makes cultured pearls real pearls, not simulated ones, and makes the price difference between natural and cultured a reflection of rarity, not quality.
