Tanzanite's lighting behavior is a measurable optical property, not a subjective impression. Its trichroic nature responds differently to daylight and incandescent light, producing a blue-dominant appearance in one and a violet-to-indigo shift in the other. Among major gemstones, very few demonstrate this degree of perceptible color variation across common lighting conditions.
