The deeper story

Visually Speaking

Light entering a mounted stone picks up the color of the metal at the girdle. 18kt white gold reflects neutral, cool light into the stone rather than warm, which minimizes color contamination and allows the stone's own refractive and color properties to read without metal interference.

Stone Story

Under direct light, a september star sapphire shows a six-rayed star that shifts as the stone moves. The rays are produced by needle-like rutile inclusions oriented along the corundum crystal's three axes. The effect only appears in cabochon-cut stones, because the curved surface is what focuses the light into a visible star. Faceted cutting eliminates it entirely.
