Russian amethyst deposits produced material at the deep purple end of the color range with red and blue secondary hues that distinguished it from lighter sources available at the time. The color profile became associated with Siberian origin in trade language. When other sources began producing comparable material, the trade retained the Siberian designation as a color standard rather than discarding it.
