Fluorescence in diamonds is caused by submicroscopic structures, most commonly nitrogen aggregates, within the crystal lattice that absorb ultraviolet radiation and re-emit it as visible blue light. The GIA's research indicates that approximately 25 to 35 percent of diamonds submitted for grading exhibit some degree of fluorescence, with very strong fluorescence occasionally correlated with reduced transparency in rare cases but generally having negligible impact on appearance under standard viewing conditions.
