For most of jewelry history, citrine and topaz were the same stone. Their shared warm yellow-to-orange range was not separable without modern gemological tools, and much antique jewelry described as topaz is now identified as citrine. The reclassification gives quartz a considerably longer fine jewelry history than its modest profile suggests.
