The deeper story

Origin Story

The Paraiba story expanded beyond Brazil when Nigerian deposits emerged in the 1990s, followed by Mozambique in the 2000s. Both produced copper-bearing tourmaline with the characteristic neon blue-green, and the trade eventually accepted them as Paraiba-type material after extended gemological debate. Brazilian origin stones retained a premium, which is a market decision based on provenance, not on any measurable difference in the copper chemistry.
