Push button clasps weren't new in the mid-twentieth century, but their wide adoption in fine jewelry dates to that period. Mid-century bracelet and link chain styles required security without visible external hardware. The push button's internal mechanism and flush surface fit those design requirements in a way that box clasps with external tabs and lobster clasps with lever mechanisms didn't.
