Charles & Colvard's collaboration with Cree Research in the 1990s produced a thermal growing process that made gem-quality moissanite commercially possible. The resulting patent gave Charles & Colvard exclusive production rights for nearly two decades. When those rights expired in 2015, additional producers entered the market. The stone's current availability across multiple brands and price points follows from that single patent expiration.
