Crystal glass is relatively soft. It scratches under everyday contact and loses surface clarity over time. Cubic zirconia, at 8 to 8.5 on the Mohs scale, holds its facet edges and polished surfaces considerably longer. Optically, CZ also has a higher refractive index than leaded glass, producing more light return from the same cut geometry.
