Chinese imperial pearl objects were substantial, with large pearls set in gold and worn as markers of rank, their luster and roundness directly signaling status. Japanese pearl culture developed differently: smaller, finer Akoya pearls in strands, worn as formal accessories in ways that aligned with the material's associations with purity and appropriate femininity.
