Pigeon's blood originated as a geographic descriptor for rubies from the Mogok Valley of Myanmar, where geological conditions produced a specific combination of vivid pure red, slight blue undertone, and strong chromium fluorescence that became the standard for finest ruby color. The designation has since evolved into a color grade applied regardless of origin. This shift reflects both the global distribution of ruby production and the trade's need for a consistent quality benchmark independent of provenance.
