Marcel Tolkowsky's 1919 dissertation "Diamond Design" applied geometrical optics to the round brilliant cut, calculating the crown and pavilion angles that would maximize the balance of light return and dispersion, the proportions Tolkowsky derived became the basis for the American Ideal Cut standard and influenced subsequent light performance research, the mathematical framework remaining the reference point for ideal cut designations a century after its publication.
