The 4Cs, cut, color, clarity, and carat weight, were developed and standardized by the Gemological Institute of America as a universal framework for diamond evaluation. Before the GIA's system, diamond quality was assessed inconsistently across markets. Today, every mined diamond submitted to a recognized grading laboratory is evaluated across all four criteria and issued a report documenting the results.
