Stone Story

Under direct light, a september star sapphire shows a six-rayed star that shifts as the stone moves. The rays are produced by needle-like rutile inclusions oriented along the corundum crystal's three axes. The effect only appears in cabochon-cut stones, because the curved surface is what focuses the light into a visible star. Faceted cutting eliminates it entirely.

Style Notes

Platinum is heavier in hand than white gold of the same volume, a function of its greater density. It also carries a higher percentage of pure metal by weight. 14kt white gold is lighter, carries a gold hallmark, and produces a comparable bright, cool finish for most design applications.
