Black onyx is almost always treated chalcedony. Gray or brownish stone is processed with sugar solution and sulfuric acid to carbonize organic material, producing a stable black that has been standard practice since ancient Rome. The treatment has no meaningful effect on durability, which is useful information when considering a gift of black onyx.
