The conflict-free diamond designation emerged in response to documented cases of diamond revenues financing armed conflict in certain regions during the 1990s. The Kimberley Process Certification Scheme, adopted in 2003 through collaboration between governments, the diamond industry, and civil society organizations, established an international framework for certifying that diamond exports originate outside war zones and do not finance armed groups.
