Stone Story
The 4Cs grading framework, cut, color, clarity, and carat weight, was developed by the Gemological Institute of America in the mid-20th century to standardize diamond evaluation across a trade that had previously lacked a universal quality vocabulary. GIA's grading scale and methodology were adopted globally and remain the reference standard for mined diamond evaluation, with grading reports issued under those criteria accepted across all major diamond trading centers.
