The term jardin entered gemological use as a way to distinguish emerald's inclusion character from the clarity grading framework developed for diamonds: healed fractures, crystal inclusions, and fluid channels being so consistent a feature of natural emerald formation that the trade developed separate language and separate assessment criteria rather than applying a standard the stone would almost never meet.
