Elemental Detail

Gold is naturally yellow, therefore, to create white gold, palladium or nickel must be incorporated into the alloy to neutralize the yellow hue. Lastly, a rhodium plating is applied over the surface to produce the bright white that makes 18kt white gold look the way it does.

A Storied Heritage

Wartime platinum restrictions created the market gap: white gold filled it. Developed in the early twentieth century as a civilian alternative to unavailable platinum, it outlasted the shortage and became a fine jewelry standard on its own terms.
