How to Measure Ring Size
While many pieces of jewelry are considered one-size-fits-most, rings require a little extra attention to find the best fit, with a variety of sizes available to accommodate a spectrum of wearers.
When ring shopping, it is essential to know which size to purchase to ensure a fit that is both comfortable and secure. Luckily, finding your perfect ring size is very simple. The best way to measure your finger is with a plastic or metal ring sizer, often available at your local jeweler. If a visit to your local jeweler isn't an easy option, check out this handy guide that will help you find your ring size. It includes valuable resources, including a ring size guide with a printable ring size chart and easy tips for measuring your ring size at home.
Top Tips for Finding the Perfect Fit
What does a good fit feel like? The correct ring size should be comfortable and secure; tight enough that the ring will not easily slide over the knuckle.
Below are simple tips that can help you find the correct ring size:
- Finger size: The size of your fingers can change throughout the day, generally starting smaller in the early morning when the weather is colder – therefore, it is best to measure your ring size at the end of the day when your fingers are warm.
- Humidity: Higher humidity levels will often make your hands swell.
- Foods: Certain foods, especially those high in salt or sugar, could temporarily make your fingers expand.
- Medications: Ask your doctor or pharmacist if any of your medications can potentially cause your hand or fingers to swell or shrink. Take their answer into account before you measure your ring size.
- Other helpful tips:
- The most common ring sizes for women's ring fingers are 6 and 7, while size 10 is most common for men's rings.
- For an accurate measurement, go through the measuring procedure three or four times and compare your results.
- If your knuckle is wider than your finger's base, measure both and go with a size that's between the two.

Easy Ways to Measure Ring Size at Home
Here are a few easy ways to measure your ring size using DIY methods.
With String
Using string as a ring sizer is an easy and effective way to estimate ring size at home.
- Wrap the string around the base of your finger.
- Use a pen to mark the point where the ends of the string meet.
- Measure the string on a ruler where you made the mark.
- Pick the closest corresponding ring size from the chart.
Pro Tip: You can also use everyday items such as dental floss or a thin strip of paper in place of string.
Use an Existing Ring
This technique is quick and convenient. If you already own a ring that fits well, just do the following:
- Measure the inside diameter of the ring in millimeters.
- Check the ring size chart to find the size that matches the measurement.
Using the Ring Size Chart
Use an international ring size chart. Our ring size chart offers you the standard US sizes, which we use for all of our Ross-Simons rings. If you are an international customer (outside the US and Canada), your country will have a different standard. You can use this international ring size chart to convert your country’s ring sizes to US sizes.
Buying a Ring for Someone Else
If you're purchasing a ring for someone else either as a gift or for an engagement, identifying the correct ring size will require some preparations. Here are some ideas when buying a ring as a surprise:
Ask someone close to your recipient if they know their ring size.
Use one of their own rings to get a measurement, ensuring it is for the correct finger, and then use the printable ring sizer or size chart above. If you can find a ring they wear on the ring finger of their right hand, that will be the best measurement (fingers on the dominant hand are usually half a size bigger), but if you can find one they wear on their middle finger and size down one full size, it should be close to their ring finger size.
Purchase a ring that can be easily resized. Some styles can be resized up or down by one or more sizes. Typically, eternity bands cannot be resized since they have gemstones all the way around, but something simpler, like a smooth gold band, is more likely to be resizable. You can find out if a ring is resizable by speaking with a jeweler.
As a last attempt, go with an average size. Statistically, the average woman's ring finger is a size 6.5 or 7. Before you make your purchase, confirm that the return policy gives you enough time should you need to make an exchange for a different size.
If you do have to guesstimate, just remember it’s easier to resize down to a smaller size than to make it bigger, so consider going slightly larger than you think you’ll need.

Ring Resizing FAQs
Below are answers to common questions regarding ring resizing.
The best way to answer this very important question would be to get in touch with the jeweler or jewelry store where you purchased the ring. Most jewelry retailers offer resizing services for engagement rings and other ring varieties. If you're looking to exchange the wrong size for the correct one, your jewelry store can guide you toward the best process.
To ensure the perfect fit, the ring resizing procedure requires adding or removing tiny amounts of metal depending on the variation between the size purchased and the new size desired. The addition or removal of metal may cause your ring to become slightly thicker or thinner after resizing. These minor changes are hardly noticeable and don't affect the overall look of the beautiful piece you selected. Most jewelers will return the ring to you after it has been cleaned and polished.
