What does 18/8 or 18/10 in flatware stand for?

18/8 and 18/10 do not refer to weight, but rather to the components of the alloy. 18/8 is 18% chromium (for strength and stain resistance) and 8% nickel (for luster and longer-lasting finish). 18/8 is the most common stainless steel flatware. The 18/10 signifies a higher nickel content. The gauge as well as the design and detail of each individual pattern determines the flatware pricing.
