They can be found in mollusks and are formed from layers of calcium carbonate deposits which are considered irritants lodged into its shell. Its name is derived from the French word Perle, which means 'leg.' The term was coined upon observing the bivalve's shape, which resembles a mutton leg. Previously, pearls were only sourced from saltwater and fresh mollusks, but most pearls are now cultivated because they are becoming rarer.

Most pearls come in white or cream but may also come in black, pink, brown, or gold to name a few. The majority of pearls are sourced from Australia and Asian countries such as China, Indonesia, and the Philippines. The pearl birthstone has calming properties, aiding its wearer with purity, truth, and loyalty.
