Watch Making Throughout History

Howard Miller Chiming Mantle Clock #405269

Nowadays watches come in all different colors, designs and styles. Most people take watches for granted and they never really stop to ask the question, where did they come from?

In order for watches to exist, clocks first had to be invented. Although sundials and other methods of telling time have been around for centuries, the first mechanical clock was invented in the 13th century and the mainspring for the clock was invented in 1485 by Leonardo da Vinci.

With the invention of the mainspring, watchmakers were able to create smaller, more practical wristwatches in 1517, thus creating the first modern-day wristwatch. Since that time, many changes and improvements have been made to the watch, helping it to become one of the most popular and useful accessories of our time.

Thirty-nine years after the mainspring was invented, German locksmith Peter Henlein designed the first pocket watch in 1524. Many different people began to use pocket watches, but wristwatches became more popular to wear.

It has been said that during the 1770s, Swiss watchmaker Abraham-Louis Perrelet began circulating original designs for the first automatic timepiece. In creating an automated device, it was discovered that the momentum from the movement of the human body was enough to power the watch and keep it running correctly. Through the years, automatic watches have advanced in their composition and sophistication, securing their spot as the most sought-after variety of timepiece for the modern gentlemen.

Further contributing to maintenance and care for automatic watches, the watch winder was invented in 1923 by a watch repairer from England. The idea of creating a device to simulate the motion and momentum of hand winding served as an invaluable tool, and continues to be a favored way to help preserve the durability, and increase the lastingness of any fine watch collection.
