Zircon: A Gem of Peace and Wisdom

3.00 ct. t.w. Blue and White Zircon Dome Ring in Sterling Silver #822825

What is Zircon?

Contrary to popular belief, zircon is not the same thing as cubic zirconia. This misunderstanding is due to the similarities between the names and also the fact they both have been used as diamond simulants. Zircon, however, is not a manmade stone. It is a naturally occurring gemstone from the mineral zirconium silicate, having great fire and a high dispersion rate (almost as high as a diamond!)

The name "zircon" is believed to have derived from Persian word zargun, meaning "golden colored," and the Arabic word zarkun, meaning "cinnabar" (a reference to the zircon's color). Natural zircon is usually a golden-red color and this shade has been referred to as hyacinth. Red zircon is also called jacinth. The most popular shades are blue zircon ("starlite") and white zircon ("sparklite") which have been heat treated to obtain their color properties. Less common hues include rose zircon, green zircon, and yellow zircon.

The zircon meaning comes from medieval superstitions and Jewish folklore. Jewish legend holds that the angel sent to watch over Adam and Eve in the Garden of Eden was called Zircon. Zircon stones are associated with peace and prosperity and are believed to incite wisdom and spiritual growth.

Ross-Simons' Zircon Jewelry Collection

Zircon is treasured for its brilliance and variety of color options. Since the zircon price is fairly low in comparison to other gemstones, zircons can be used to create the same look as other jewels for a lot less. For example, a blue zircon ring can replicate the appearance of an aquamarine ring. And zircon earrings in white can be worn in place of diamonds. Usually set in sterling silver or vermeil, zircon gemstone jewelry at Ross-Simons offers you fine and affordable options for the styles you love!

Zircon Jewelry Care & Handling

Zircon rates a 6.5-7.5 on the Mohs' hardness scale, meaning it's quite brittle. For this reason, you should avoid harsh abrasives while cleaning your zircon jewelry and keep it away from situations where it could face high impact. Most blue and white zircons are heat treated, so keep them away from bright lights in order to maintain their color. Do not use ultrasonic or steam cleaners. Clean your zircon jewelry with a soft brush and warm soap water and store it safely it its Ross-Simons presentation box.
