Prehnite Ring #428097

Prehnite: a unique green glow

Prehnite is named for Colonel Hendrik von Prehn, a Dutch mineralogist and early governor of the Cape of Good Hope settlement in South Africa, who first discovered the stone in the early 18th century. Prehnite has the distinction of being the first mineral to be named after a person.

The gemstone prehnite also goes by several nicknames. Early traders called prehnite "cape emerald", referring to the location where the stone was first discovered and its visual resemblance to emeralds. In China, prehnite is called "grape jade" due to its cluster formation habit that resembles a bunch of pale green grapes. Prehnite is also referred to as the "prediction stone", as some believe it can enhance dreams and memory.

Prehnite's minty green hue offers an intriguing luster, ranging from shiny to pearlescent, and sometimes seems to glow in the sun. While green is the most popular shade for jewelry, prehnite also comes in yellow, grey, white and colorless. Prehnite gemstones are most often cut into cabochons, but can also be faceted for a unique look. Prehnite is a versatile gem, looking beautiful in sterling silver and gold jewelry designs.

When prehnite was first discovered, it was very rare, with the only known location for the gemstone being South Africa. Since then, more deposits have been found and today, most of the gem quality prehnite hails from Australia. Prehnite is also found in Canada, China, Germany, India and the United States.
