The name is derived from Latin citrina which means "yellow" and is also the origin of the word "citron." Related to the French word citron meaning lemon. Has been called the "sun stone" and thought to be capable of holding sunlight and useful in the protection from snakebite. Also known as the "merchant's stone".

November's birthstone is associated with gold and wealth. The Romans hailed citrine as the stone of Mercury, the messenger god, and used it for carving intaglios. The birthstone for zodiac sign Scorpio and Sagittarius.
