The Retro period of jewelry design typically refers to the period from just before WW II through the 1950's. You will note that jewels have a soft, romantic touch, with the return of design elements like flowers and fans, ribbons and ruffles -- designs which were set against the stark realities of the war. Romance and femininity are the perfect escape, as treasured today as they were 75 years ago. When we think of the 1950's, two icons emerge -- the ever-present lapel pin and the charm bracelet. Look for startling rectangular retro brooches, bracelets and cocktail rings of massive proportions inspired by the rise of Hollywood flamboyance. Also you will see a significant use of white gold and platinum; white metals became the preferred foil for cascading diamond pins and rings. Retro jewelry is highly collectible; and even the simplest pieces of fine jewelry with good design fetch far more today than when they were first introduced.
